How the Author of 'Water for Elephants' Lost Her Way

 

We read "Water for Elephants" fairly early, and liked it. (PRI 7.5; ARI 8). This article describes how a letter from a fan of the book, who was serving life in prison on a murder charge, grew into an obsession for author Sara Gruen. Her quest to overturn the man's conviction derailed her life--and possibly her mind. Fascinating and sad. Don't expect her next book anytime soon.
