Next Up for March 4: The Bees
A book that's been described as "The Hunger Games" meets "The Handmaid's Tale" or, maybe, "A Game of Drones." It is Dana's pick, and we meet via Zoom at 7pm on March 4 to discuss! The audio version is quite nice, if you like to listen.
If you want additional materials, here is an interview with the author. She's best known as a playwright--this is her first novel. If, when you're done, you want more books about bees, try this list, by beekeeper Helen Jukes. Her memoir is "A Honey Bee Heart Has Five Openings." And there's this nonfiction list, which has a beekeeping slant.
Want a mystery about a beekeeper, set in Orange County? Here's one: "Telling the Bees," by Peggy Hesketh, an OC-based writer and UCI writing instructor. Cheryl and Michelle might have known her. She either worked for the Register or one of the community editions at one point. Sadly, she passed away in 2018, but she left a rich legacy behind.
Finally, here's a recipe for the Rusty Nail, a drink that features the honey-inflected liqueur Drambuie.
See you in March!

I listened for about 2 hours and wasn't sure I could stick it, but now I'm buzzing! :)
ReplyDelete(Other bee-related books I recall reading: "Bee Season" and "The Secret Lives of Bees." Both very good reads if I remember correctly.)
I am hating this as a book. Will I like it better as a listen?
ReplyDeleteI think you might!
