Prize-Winning Books of 2020

Everybody loves a winner, right? Literary Hub compiled a list of books that garnered awards in 2020, along with the finalists for each award. Personally, Shuggie Bain and Hamnet are high on my to-listen list. Got Luster as a bargain e-book from some site or other.

Nickel Boys was good, but it was no Underground Railroad. I listened to Milkman, and while it was a GREAT audio book, very funny, and dark and wonderful, I can't imagine trying to read it, thanks to its stream of consciousness and the fact that the characters have no names--they're known as "Almost Boyfriend," "Middle Sister" and, of course, "Milkman." BTW, it won one of the richest prizes in 2020: $122,000 for author Anna Burns, atop the Man Booker Prize she won the previous year before (worth about $80K). Burns was about flat broke when she was writing the book. So good on her!

  1. Yippee! Love these lists! Wow, surprised at the meager award $ for Pulitzer and NBA. Sheesh! I also enjoyed looking at the finalists. I always love the NBA winners (usually much more than the Pulitzers), so found their finalists of special interest. Starting to dig into Shuggie Bain. Still swooning over Hamnet. Made if halfway through Interior Chinatown. The Children's Bible up next. And just added some from this list: Luster, Secret Lives of Church Ladies and Lying Life of Adults (just finished watching Brilliant Life HBO series. Yas! ) So, once again, THANK YOU, CARROLL!! Another on this list of finalists, which Carroll already recommended to me, was, Drive Your Plow Over The Bones, which I still think about and either shiver or smile. Lastly, GO ANNA BURNS for winning the right awards! lol. (Did I mention Hamnet?)
